Quiet and 'timeout' zones provide children with a useful and interesting alternative to the usual 'hubbub' of the main play area if desired. Garden Karma produces a range of different seating options, from the huge 'Story Tellers Throne' surrounded by Mushroom Stools, to the simple bench seat.
Quiet areas can be separated from the main playground by standard palisade fencing if required but we would like to think that more creative ideas add another dimension to this new space. Perhaps a 'Mountain Range' screen, brightly coloured giant pencils, chalkboards or a 'Wobbly Mirror' panel?
Sensory areas and timber planting boxes will not only add beauty to the environment but will also aid children's understanding of plant growth. The addition of Perspex window shapes in the side of the planters also allows the children to study the development of root systems and see mini beasts in action.
Many schools have little redundant areas of space that are crying out to be transformed into a secret garden - shall we quietly get on with it?
