What are the basics of gardening?

Starting a garden is like a building, it's all about the location.

Gardening

is all about finding the right combination of sunlight, fertile soil and water for your plants to thrive. It's also about fulfilling your passion, so select the plants you like. Use the resources here as a starting point and in no time you'll have a beautiful garden, no matter what level of gardening experience you have.

Growing vegetables is quite simple. Last year, my 4-year-old daughter and I spent some time learning what plants need to grow. Our conclusion? Earth, water, sun, care and time. Whether you're thinking of putting some containers in your yard, building a 4×4 raised garden box, or breaking half of your yard, here are some tips to get you started.

When plants are required to extend long roots to get their water, rather than getting it the easiest way (also known as the hose), they will be stronger plants overall and you will have less work to cope with their H2O needs. Be sure to keep watering only in the morning and in the evening. Watering in the afternoon will quickly evaporate before the plants have a chance to get what they need. Try watering before 10 in the morning and after 4 or 5 in the afternoon, or even after.
